The Goldner Family Origins

Shmuel and Channa Goldner settled in north-east Romania, in the town of Bivolari, on the banks of the river Prut. They may have come from Russia, attracted to the area in the mid 19th century with the promise of greater freedom for Jews, such as the ability to farm or own land. Shmuel and Channa had five sons: Moshe, Meyer (b. 1868), Hershel, Leizer, and Abram.

The Goldner's were a merchant family, and Meyer may have worked as a peddler of dry goods. In 1889, Meyer married Ciornia Mindla (Minna) Faibish, the daughter of Leib ben Faives, from the nearby town of Sculeni. Over the next 20 years, Meyer and Minna had 10 children: Sarah, Lena, Alex, David, Morris, Aaron, Bessie, Leon, Marian, and Edward.

Meyer's children began slowly to immigrate to the United States. Sarah and Lena came to New York in 1911, followed by David in 1912. They sent money home so that in April of 1914, Meyer and Minna came with most of the rest of the family on the S. S. Kaiser Wilhelm II. The final sibling to come to the US was Aaron in July of 1914.

The Goldner family had a family millenary business in New York for many years. The family moved to Brooklyn in the 1920's. Sarah married Joel Primer in 1918, Lena married Benjamin Turner in 1922, Marian married Jack Weil in 1938, and Bessie married Harry Rabin in 1929. Minna passed away in 1934, and Meyer in 1950.

Meyer's grand-children and great-grandchildren now live all over the US, from New York and Florida to Massachusetts and Virginia. Most of Meyer's brother's families remained in Bivolari and Iasi for several decades. After WWII, the family immigrated to Brazil, Israel, and the US.

The Broitman Family Origins

Abram Broitman, the son of Shulum and Sarah Broitman, was born around 1881 in Savran, Ukraine. In 1898, he married Chaika Darish (b. ~1883), the daughter of Hershel and Pearl Darish of Olgapol, Ukraine. Making a good living as a lumber merchant, they had several children, including: Anita (b. 1906), Aaron (b.1907), and Rose (b. 1918 or 1920). The older children were well educated, and the family was fairly well off.

During the terrors of the Bolshovik revolution, the Broitman family fled pogroms in their small village, and were smuggled into Romania. After several years there, they wished to travel to the US (1924). However, immigration quotas had been filled, and they wound up going to Canada. Above is the oldest photo we have of the Broitman family, taken from their passport. The stamps from their passports detail the journey that Chaika Broitman and her children made on the S.S. President- from Bucharest, Romania to Serbia to Italy, and finally to Halifax, Canada more than a month later. In Canada, the family lived in Toronto. It was there that Joseph Broitman was born in January, 1925.

Around 1922, the Broitman family fled their small village in Southern Russia (Savran, Ukraine), and were smuggled into Romania. From there, they wished to travel to the US (1924). However , the quota had closed, and they wound up going to Canada. Below is one of the two passports that remain from their trip - one for Abraham Broitman, and one for Chaika Broitman and the children. The stamps on one of the documents detail the journey that Chaika Broitman and her children made - from Bucarest, Romania to Serbia to Italy, and finally to Halifax, Canada more than a month later. In 1927, they entered the US at Niagara Falls.

Sponsored by cousins in Philadelphia, the family moved again in 1927. By 1929, the family was living in Brooklyn. Aaron stayed in Toronto until 1929, where he was involved with the clothing unions. In Brooklyn, Abram sold fruit - fist from a cart, and then from a small stand. Abram and Chaika lived there until they both passed away around 1960.

The Broitman's passage from Romania was probably subsidized by the Jewish Colonization Association (JCA) - an organization that attempted to resettle European Jews in farms. Upon his entrance to the US, Aaron Broitman declared that he was going to be a farmer.

Because the Broitman family came to the United States via Canada, there are records both of their arrival in Halifax, and into the US. I have been able to find these records via the Canadian National Archives and the US National Archives (M1480, Roll 16/17). Below is their record of crossing into the US, as transcribed by a NARA volunteer. My corrections are in italics:

The Weil Family Origins

Origins

My branch of the Weil family originated near Dzikow/Tarnobrzeg, a small city in the area of the Austro-Hungarian empire known as Galicia. The town is located in present day Poland (50º 35' N, 21º 40' E). Meyer may have been a poultry broker. He had at least one son, Sanna Wahl around 1863. According to records from the town, the Wahl surname was fairly widespread.

Sanna married Yetta Abramowitz, the daughter of Aron Abramowitz and Jenta Wilkenfeld around 1883. They had two children while still in Poland: Majer (Matty), who was named after Sanna's father, and Reisla (Rose). According to the Radomysl-nad-Sanem birth register, the family was residing in Radomysl-nad-Sanem, Majdan, and Witkowice between 1878 and 1886.

Couple believed to be Jenta Wilkenfeld Abramowitz and Aron Abramowitz
In 1890, the family made the decision to come to New York. Sanna traveled from Dzikow to Hamburg, Germany, where he took the steamship "Weimar" to Leith, Scotland. About two weeks later, Sanna embarked from Glasgow for New York on the State of Georgia, arriving May 8, 1890.

A year after Sana Wahl arrived in New York, Yetta, Matt, and Rose Weil traveled to America. They embarked from Rotterdam on the S.S. Veendam, and arrived in New York on August 12, 1891.

Passenger manifest for Itte (Yetta), Majer (Matt), & Raisel (Rose) Weil on the S.S. Veendam. Note that "Raisel "was transcribed incorrectly as "Peril"
In my family, the name WEIL was originally WAHL. Sam Weil arrived in 1890 under the name "Zanne WAHL," and the name was WAHL in both the 1900 and 1910 Federal Censuses. However, by the 1920 Federal Census, the name had been changed to WEIL. Family legend has it that it was the idea of the eldest brother, Matty, to change the name. Matty, an actor, thought that WEIL looked better on a marquee - perhaps because "WAHL" sounded too Jewish.

Although he was known as Samuel Weil on US legal documents, Samuel's Hebrew name was "Natanel," the equivalent of "Nathaniel." However, the Yiddish pronunciation of this name is "Nasanel," which was shortened to "Sanel" or "Sana" as a nickname. This is why his name on the manifest of the "State of Georgia" in May 1890 is Zanne. In New York, Sanel became Samuel.

The family settled in New York City. Sam and Yetta had six more children who survived to adulthood: Harry, Bella, Sadie, Max, Abe (Albert), and Jack. The surname was changed to WEIL between 1910 and 1920. Sam made a living as a coat presser until he became too disabled to work any longer. Matty was involved as an actor in the early Broadway stage. Harry was a successful businessman. Sadie worked in the publishing industry. Al was a championship roller skater, railroad detective, and antiques collector. Jack was a postal clerk.

Yetta Weil passed away in 1944, and Sam in 1954. They are buried in Queens, NY, alongside Max, Sadie, and Abe.

Snowy Owl Sighting

http://nyti.ms/1jTagWh

There it was sitting on top of a car outside of my office - a large office park on the north side  of Woburn. I thought someone had l eft a bag on the roof until it flew away. Great, slow waves of its wings.

I saw where it went - the gravel depot the property company uses at the end of the parking lot. I parked, hoping it was in sight. It  sat just long enough for me to take a photo and then silently it swooped away.

Coincidentally, that day the New York Times had an article about sightings of this beautiful bird. Explains why I haven't seen any lemmings here lately!
